Star Trek: Beyond Movie Review {Starring Chris Pine & Idris Elba} #StarTrekMovie

August 1, 2016 by Jay Crawford

Star Trek Beyond Movie Review {Starring Chris Pine & Idris Elba} #StarTrekMovie

Are you a Trekkie? I am. I have been for many years. Ever since the days of the original films I have followed Star Trek, all the way through four more TV series right up through the reboot films of today. I wasn’t all that big of a fan until my dad introduced me to the movies in the early 80s. I also would have to say that I didn’t follow Enterprise all that much. I did watch a few episodes, but I didn’t really watch the whole series. I did watch all of The Next Generation, most of Deep Space Nine and all of Voyager as well. I am rambling a bit here, so let’s get to the point. I am here to offer my opinion on the latest Star Trek film, Star Trek: Beyond.

Star Trek Beyond Movie Review

Star Trek: Beyond features the crew of the Enterprise, the same as in the original series and film, traveling through space discovering new planets and new species. In this film, the Enterprise crew, led by Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) are on a mission to rescue a stranded ship and her crew when they are attacked by an unknown alien race, led by the mysterious Krall (Idris Elba). After crash landing on a nearby planet, they meet Jayla (Sofia Boutella), another alien who was attacked by Krall and is now stranded on the planet as well. Here they must figure out how to survive on this alien world and figure out why Krall attacked their ship. The results are chaotic and full of twists and turns that will leave you guessing what is going to happen next. This film also features Zoe Saldana as Lt. Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Sulu.

My Thoughts

I thought this movie was outstanding. I have to admit that the first reboot film lacked a certain flair for me and I wasn’t all that impressed, however the last two films in this reboot series have been fantastic. I really love Zachary Quinto as Spock. I would even go as far as to say that I think he makes a better Spock than the late Leonard Nimoy (Gasp! To Trekkies, this may seem like blasphemy!). And I am warming up to Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. But, by far the actor that has nailed their role perfectly is Karl Urban as “Bones” McCoy. I can even picture him as DeForest Kelley if I close my eyes and listen to him. This film is action packed and full of good laughs too. These are both staples of the Star Trek films.

The one thing that I love about this reboot series of Star Trek films is that they did not stray too far from the original. In fact, they even pay homage to the original cast in this one. I have seen many reboots that rewrite the story completely of how the characters became who they are. This series thus far has not done that. Also, they acknowledged the deaths of Leonard Nimoy (the original Spock) and Anton Yelchin (who plays Chekov in this film) at the end. That was a real classy move, I must say. I give it 4 and a half stars out of 5.

If you’re looking for a good movie to see this weekend, then this is not a bad place to start. I would even take the kids. The language and violence are at a minimum, so it isn’t too bad for the kiddos. Who knows? You may have a young Trekkie in the making in your household!

About Jay Crawford

Jay is a die hard sports fan {football and college basketball being his favorites}. His favorite teams are the Carolina Panthers and Tarheels and, of course, his alma mater, the Appalachian Mountaineers. He spends his free time listening to music, especially KISS, Def Leppard, the Eagles and a lot of the newer country music, and watching comic book and action movies. The more special effects - the better.

Unlike Jay, I didn’t watch Star Trek movies as a kid. I think the first one I saw was Nemesis and was shocked that I liked it so much. I might have to go see this one, too, at some point.

  30. Kita Bryant says

I think the first film was amazing and did a great job of covering the back story. The new ones are awesome but they DO NOT follow the original so it’s not fair to compare the two, in my opinion.

  31. Robin Rue says

  35. Rosey says

I didn’t know Chris Pine was Captain Kirk (I’m really behind times). He’s a good choice!

    • Dawn McAlexander says

      August 3, 2016 at 5:21 am

It’s ok. You know now. And if you are a fan of his, that might give you more reason to see this one. I think he looks a bit like a young William Shatner. What do you think?

  36. Crystal says

    August 2, 2016 at 9:03 pm

My husband and I saw it over the weekend. It was really good…just what we expected. I would say that I preferred the first Star Trek movie more, but this was a solid choice.

  37. Pamela says

    August 2, 2016 at 10:53 pm

This doesn’t appeal to me at all, but my sons-in-law are looking forward to seeing it. From your review and all the great comments I think it must be a great movie.

    • Dawn McAlexander says

      August 4, 2016 at 8:37 am

I was just like you and figured I wouldn’t like them at all. However, I accompanied someone else to Nemesis when it came out and was surprised that I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Even though I still haven’t become a hard core Star Trek fan, I have watched a few more since and liked them all.

  40. Azlin Bloor says

    August 3, 2016 at 2:31 pm

I am certainly a huge Star Trek fan, if being a Trekkie doesn’t involve being a convention groupie, then yeah, I’m a Trekkie too! I loved the movie but I actually thought that it was the weakest of the new lot, it rambled on slightly and was missing the customary humour that’s usually found throughout the movie.
I love Chris Pine and think he makes a great Kirk, with great comic timing. But yeah, Karl Urban, he makes Bones and whining look sexy!

  41. Jocelyn Brown says

    August 3, 2016 at 7:37 pm
