Are you a Trekkie? I am. I have been for many years. Ever since the days of the original films I have followed Star Trek, all the way through four more TV series right up through the reboot films of today. I wasn’t all that big of a fan until my dad introduced me to the movies in the early 80s. I also would have to say that I didn’t follow Enterprise all that much. I did watch a few episodes, but I didn’t really watch the whole series. I did watch all of The Next Generation, most of Deep Space Nine and all of Voyager as well. I am rambling a bit here, so let’s get to the point. I am here to offer my opinion on the latest Star Trek film, Star Trek: Beyond.
Star Trek Beyond Movie Review
Star Trek: Beyond features the crew of the Enterprise, the same as in the original series and film, traveling through space discovering new planets and new species. In this film, the Enterprise crew, led by Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) are on a mission to rescue a stranded ship and her crew when they are attacked by an unknown alien race, led by the mysterious Krall (Idris Elba). After crash landing on a nearby planet, they meet Jayla (Sofia Boutella), another alien who was attacked by Krall and is now stranded on the planet as well. Here they must figure out how to survive on this alien world and figure out why Krall attacked their ship. The results are chaotic and full of twists and turns that will leave you guessing what is going to happen next. This film also features Zoe Saldana as Lt. Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Sulu.
My Thoughts
I thought this movie was outstanding. I have to admit that the first reboot film lacked a certain flair for me and I wasn’t all that impressed, however the last two films in this reboot series have been fantastic. I really love Zachary Quinto as Spock. I would even go as far as to say that I think he makes a better Spock than the late Leonard Nimoy (Gasp! To Trekkies, this may seem like blasphemy!). And I am warming up to Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. But, by far the actor that has nailed their role perfectly is Karl Urban as “Bones” McCoy. I can even picture him as DeForest Kelley if I close my eyes and listen to him. This film is action packed and full of good laughs too. These are both staples of the Star Trek films.

The one thing that I love about this reboot series of Star Trek films is that they did not stray too far from the original. In fact, they even pay homage to the original cast in this one. I have seen many reboots that rewrite the story completely of how the characters became who they are. This series thus far has not done that. Also, they acknowledged the deaths of Leonard Nimoy (the original Spock) and Anton Yelchin (who plays Chekov in this film) at the end. That was a real classy move, I must say. I give it 4 and a half stars out of 5.
If you’re looking for a good movie to see this weekend, then this is not a bad place to start. I would even take the kids. The language and violence are at a minimum, so it isn’t too bad for the kiddos. Who knows? You may have a young Trekkie in the making in your household!
What Do You Think Of My Star Trek: Beyond Movie Review
Do you agree or disagree? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Our entire family is so excited about seeing the latest installment of Star Trek. We’ve always loved the movies and all the series, too. These really took Star Trek to the next level, though.
My husband is a Trekie. He will be thrilled to know that there is a movie for Star Trek.
I can’t wait to see this! I hope this installment is as good as the first two!
Not my type of movie but I think my 3 oldest kiddos would love it! I will have to let them know and see if they want to check it out! looks good!
My husband and son went to see this on opening night. They said it was a great movie. I still need to go and see it.
My son in law is a big Star Trek fan. I think he is planning on watching this movie.
I was never a huge Star Trek fan but my bff is! Probably will end up watching this to accompany her.
Girls night at a Star Trek movie. I love it!
This movie is one of my husband’s favorites! It is really good.
That is great that he loved a new movie that much. So many people complain about the movies these days but I think there are some really good ones that have come out recently.
We go back a very long time wiht this franchise. I have to see this one, too!
I still can’t decide if I want to see this movie or not. I was forced to watch Star Trek as a kid but I did like this previous movie. I will probably see it when it comes out on DVD.
Unlike Jay, I didn’t watch Star Trek movies as a kid. I think the first one I saw was Nemesis and was shocked that I liked it so much. I might have to go see this one, too, at some point.
I have really really wanted to see this!
I’m not really a fan of Star Trek….but I love me some Chris Pine 😉
Thanks for your review. I do feel that this reboot has been highly successful in staying true to the original, and I like that a lot. And the action has been terrific in these!
My friend is a huge Star Trek fan. She is excited for this movie
Star Trek has left a nice legacy and it’s great to see they’re still continuing with the saga! Im excited for this new installment
This looks like a great movie idea, thanks for sharing. I am so going to check it out asap!
This is a helpful review. I may need to rewatch the second movie to catch up. I do want to see this though!
I can’t wait to see this! I saw last Star Trek movie that came out and i really enjoyed that.
I have to watch the movies and catch up but I love Star Trek! I want to see this!
I am so excited about this movie. It’s been ages since the last time I watch Star Trek.
I’m really not a fan of Star Trek, but I do love Idris Elba and he can make any film good!
Oh yes, Idris Elba is fabulous. I think having him in this movie might bring in a whole new set of fans that weren’t into the Star Trek films before.
I am not a trekkie but I have so many friends that are and cannot wait to see the movie soon.
Oh, this is a nice movie. I am so excited to see this movie, your review is a big help.
Thanks for your post! I’m a fan of Chris Pine and I’m excited to watch him in this movie!
He really isn’t that hard on the eyes either. 😉
This is a nice movie. My hubby will surely love to watch this just like the last one.
It’s good to know that this movie is as awesome as they said it would be. I completely agree with you, the first film wasn’t that good. I haven’t had the chance to see this one! I will soon!
I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan but I’ve seen the films. I haven’t gotten around to seeing this one though and it would be awesome to see this with the kids!
I haven’t seen these movies but now I want to. You always have the best reviews!!!
We would both like to say thank you! We hope that you enjoy the movie when/if you go see it.
I am mostly excited because of Chris Pine. So I will take my nephew and we will both be happy! YAY!
I think the first film was amazing and did a great job of covering the back story. The new ones are awesome but they DO NOT follow the original so it’s not fair to compare the two, in my opinion.
I have loved the other movies and so I am glad to hear that this one is recommended. Can’t wait to see it.
I may not be a trekkie per say but I do love these movies. I will definitely be going to see this one.
This looks like it is going to be a good movie to take even the little ones to go and see.
My son is a Star Trek fan… I go with him when he wants to see it on big screen. Not much of a fan though.
I didn’t know Chris Pine was Captain Kirk (I’m really behind times). He’s a good choice!
It’s ok. You know now. And if you are a fan of his, that might give you more reason to see this one. I think he looks a bit like a young William Shatner. What do you think?
My husband and I saw it over the weekend. It was really good…just what we expected. I would say that I preferred the first Star Trek movie more, but this was a solid choice.
This doesn’t appeal to me at all, but my sons-in-law are looking forward to seeing it. From your review and all the great comments I think it must be a great movie.
Ah! We haven’t had a chance to check this one out yet but it looks so good! I never liked Star Trek until these came out too!
I am probably the only one on the face of this earth who has never watched a Star Trek Movie…LOL. I have never warmed up to it at all
I was just like you and figured I wouldn’t like them at all. However, I accompanied someone else to Nemesis when it came out and was surprised that I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Even though I still haven’t become a hard core Star Trek fan, I have watched a few more since and liked them all.
I am certainly a huge Star Trek fan, if being a Trekkie doesn’t involve being a convention groupie, then yeah, I’m a Trekkie too! I loved the movie but I actually thought that it was the weakest of the new lot, it rambled on slightly and was missing the customary humour that’s usually found throughout the movie.
I love Chris Pine and think he makes a great Kirk, with great comic timing. But yeah, Karl Urban, he makes Bones and whining look sexy!
I am so stoked to see this! I’m a huge fan of star trek and even with these new movies this hasn’t changed!
I am a huge Trek fan, to begin with, and since the new movies have been coming out you better believe I am at the showing! It was a thing we used to do with dad when we were growing up, go to the movies to watch Captian Kirk and Spock! I can not wait!!
My son loves Startrek and that is the reason why I am fan now too. I love watching with my son that’s why I watch the movies he like,
Awesome movie! Kids enjoyed this as well. I guess we are going to watch it again for the nth time ha-ha 😀 Good movie!
Our family is so excited about seeing the latest Star Trek Movie. We’ve always loved the movies and all the series, too. Hubby is a huge fan!
Not a fan of star trek but my husband watches it. Seems like a nice watch after all.
