Last weekend, we saw Chris Young at Carrington Pavilion, in Danville, Va. I’ve been to this venue a couple of times, but it has been probably 15 years or so, as it’s a bit of a drive for me. But hey, it’s Chris Young, so… if you haven’t been to this particular setting, it’s an outdoor arena, with seats undercover, as well as an open air lawn section. I have seen Chris Young once before, when he was on tour with Alan Jackson, so that’s been a hot minute. Here is what we thought of his performance as well as the Young Love and Saturday Nights setlist.

What Did We Think Of Chris Young’s Performance?
One of the highlights of the show included a gender reveal after “Gettin’ You Home.” Someone in the audience had asked Chris Young if he would do their gender reveal and he happily [and perhaps a bit nervously] agreed. Young asked what the concertgoer was hoping for and she said “a girl.” He said “no pressure” and revealed to the audience that he had never done a gender reveal before. As an viewing participant, I thought it was cute to be a part of this special moment for this family in a small way. And I thought Chris Young was a good sport for going along with the request. Another highlight for me was when Chris Young sang about Conway Twitty in his performance of, “I Can Take It From There.” He stopped and got the crowd to cheer for Twitty. As a person who grew up listening to Twitty with my aunt who adored him, I feel like he is an artist who contributed a lot but is perhaps underappreciated with today’s younger audience. I wish more people would add a song of his to their setlist when they are choosing which artists they would like to cover.
Chris Young also shared the story behind “Drowning” during the concert. I knew snippets of it, but what a touching and heartfelt song. He asked everyone in the audience who had been affected by loss to hold up their camera flashlights. It was really a beautiful moment. For an instant, everyone in the audience had something joining each of us. And Young’s voice really shines through on the simpler, more meaningful songs, such as this one.
Learn from my mistake! If you are planning on buying a Chris Young shirt when you see him on tour this year, I recommend buying it fast. There was this one shirt I was eyeing but I was like, “I’ll get it before his set.” Then I started seeing it literally everywhere in the crowd. I have never witnessed anything like it. It seemed like every other person had that one particular shirt. So, I got some serious FOMO and went to make my purchase and, guess what? There were no more in my size – or almost any size, for that matter. Serves me right! So take my advice, dear readers, and buy the shirt fast. Or pay later, lol.
Openers for the show were Dylan Schneider and Matt Boswell, who each put on a great performance. I especially enjoyed Schneider’s cover of Nickelback’s “Someday.” There is just something I really enjoy about seeing country artists throwing in the occasional rock song. Chris Young’s band also played snippets of Metallica and AC/DC between songs!
