Check out the Barenaked Ladies In Flight Tour setlist from their performance at SummerLark in Winston-Salem, NC on 5/11/24.

This weekend was a busy one for the the Eat Play Rock crew. We went to THREE concerts! Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night. On Saturday night, we saw the Barenaked Ladies in Winston-Salem, NC. They performed as the headliners for the annual SummerLark event, which helps to raise money for the Cancer Patient Support Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Check out all our pictures from this event, the Barenaked Ladies In Flight Tour Setlist, and what we thought of the show. You’ll have to check back later in the week to see what other concerts we took in this weekend.

Barenaked Ladies Concert Review

I’d not previously seen Barenaked Ladies in concert, but I have absolutely annoyed the crap out of Kenny singing “It’s been one week since you looked at me…” and “Chickety China the Chinese Chicken…” for several days now. I also neither know all the words to that song, nor could I sing that fast if I did, so I threw in a lot of “da daddaaa da da.” For example, “I’m the kind of guy who laughs at a funeral, da da da daaaaa da da daaaa…” Yes, it’s as amazing as you might imagine. When Barenaked Ladies performed that song, they told us to sing along if we could and he would TRY too, hahaha! The words were on the big screen behind the band for those who wanted to try to sing along. I tried and failed spectacularly! *Bows*

The band is pretty funny. Who knew if you went to a Barenaked Ladies show, you also got a bunch of standup comedians? NC is famous for tobacco, in particular the RJR Tobacco company. The band was joking about reading Lord of the Rings by RJR Tolkien and going to Devil Hill [aka Kill Devil Hills] where the Wright Brothers flew their plane. Silly. I loved it!

The concert was great! They sounded fabulous and were the right amount of “loud.” That matters as one of the concerts I went to this weekend was, unfortunately, so loud that it was distorted and really difficult to understand. The Barenaked Ladies experience was not that at all. Little children were there and I think it was perfectly fine. The highlight of the show, for me, was when they did “Rock Of Ages” by Def Leppard. Def Leppard is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE BANDS! Unfortunately Def Leppard will not be touring near me this year so I will be missing them. Barenaked Ladies made a comment earlier in the show about how the Taylor Swift “Eras” Tour did not hit Winston-Salem, so they brought the tour to us. Little did they know they also supplied me with my obligatory Def Leppard fix! Thanks, guys! The drummer and the lead singer swapped places for the Def Leppard song, the band rocked out and truly did the song justice! It was one of the best concerts I have been to this year, if not ever!

By the way, let me say how cool it was to see someone play an accordion. I have been to 100s of concerts and I cannot recall ever having seen one played live. Once you have been to as many concerts as I have, it’s nice to learn that you have, in fact, not seen it all. All of the band members are super talented, playing multiple instruments each and swapping out throughout the show. I highly recommend seeing Barenaked Ladies live. Their music is good on the radio but it is GREAT live. In person is definitely the way this band is meant to be enjoyed.

SummerLark Food

There were several food trucks set up at SummerLark. I definitely suggest getting there early [it’s an annual event] so you can avoid long lines. We arrived at about 5 [the show started at 6] and talked about what we wanted to eat for a few minutes. I picked up a pizza quickly [SUPER good and $10 – a great price for these types of events] and Kenny got a burger and fries which was MUCH more expensive and the wait was perhaps 45 minutes. I am definitely going for the pizza again next time.
