Jason Bourne Movie Review {Starring Matt Damon} #JasonBourne

Jason Bourne Movie Review {Starring Matt Damon} #JasonBourne

I have always been an action movie fan. From my younger days of watching films like Star Wars and the Indiana Jones trilogy right up until today’s high-flying action flicks like The Avengers, I have loved action films. I have been especially fond over the years of James Bond films. There was always plenty of action in a Bond film, you could count on it. Today, the Jason Bourne films have become the new trademark for high-impact action films, and have supplanted the James Bond films as the benchmark for action. I do love the Jason Bourne films as well. So, I went out this past week and checked out the latest Jason Bourne film in the theaters, aptly titled Jason Bourne.

Jason Bourne Movie Review

Jason Bourne is the fourth film to feature Matt Damon as the legendary CIA operative Jason Bourne. In the previous three (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, all based on the original Robert Ludlum novels), Jason Bourne doesn’t know who he is or how he got to be such a fluid killing machine. In this film, however, Bourne knows the truth about how he became Jason Bourne. He was born David Webb. His father, Richard Webb, was involved in a CIA project called Treadstone. That project is what turned David Webb into Jason Bourne.

Bourne has also discovered that the majority of his grief could be blamed on CIA Director Robert Dewey (played by Tommy Lee Jones). In an attempt to get back at Dewey, Bourne learns more that he wants to know about why he became Jason Bourne. He is forced to deal with the truth as well as a highly skilled assassin simply known as Asset (Vincent Cassel) as well as a young CIA officer named Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), whom Bourne is unsure of and doesn’t really trust. The result is a whirlwind of action that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

My Thoughts

I really liked the movie. It doesn’t disappoint as an action film. There are plenty of fight scenes and car chases to thrill even the most avid action movie buff. The story line was well conceived, and the acting was a sure plus. Kudos to Tommy Lee Jones for playing a marvelous bad guy once again. Matt Damon is as stellar as ever as Jason Bourne, and I even liked Alicia Vikander’s role of Heather Lee. By the way, just in case you were wondering, Julia Stiles does reprise her role of Nicky Parsons in this film (in the other three films, she was a former CIA analyst who befriends Bourne and becomes a powerful ally for him).

In saying all that, though, I will say that I didn’t think it was as good as the previous three films. It comes close, but it just doesn’t quite measure up to me. I can’t really put a finger on why, but the other three were great films to me and this one is just a good one. You may disagree.

Oh, and also, when I am mentioning the other three films, I know there was a fourth film that featured Jeremy Renner (The Bourne Legacy), however, that film was loosely based on an Eric Van Lustbader novel and did not feature Jason Bourne at all, so I consider that film to be a completely different entity in itself and not part of the Bourne films. Kind of like Never Say Never Again is not considered a part of the Bond films.

There is a fair amount of violence in this film, so I would consider leaving the kids at home. It isn’t gory, and the foul language is a minimum, which both make for a better movie in my book. I would give this film 4 out of 5 stars. I would definitely say you could do worse if you went to the theater so see a movie this weekend.

So, there you have it. Have a great time at the movies this weekend!

I’m so excited to see this movie. The Bourne series is one of those rare movie franchises that holds up over so many sequels.
