If you are looking for some entertainment this weekend, or if you are just a huge fan of Reese Witherspoon, you might really enjoy this movie. So, we are going to share with you our thoughts about her latest film, Hot Pursuit.
Hot Pursuit Movie Review
The Plot
Hot Pursuit stars Reese Witherspoon as Rose Cooper, a strict, by-the-book police officer who, due to an unfortunate incident involving the mayor’s son, has been busted down to evidence storage clerk. However, she gets a reprieve when an informant who worked for a huge drug lord needs to be escorted to Dallas, Texas, to testify against his former boss. She is picked to accompany Detective Jackson (played by Richard T. Jones) to the informant’s residence and to escort him and his wife, Daniella (played by Sofia Vergara), to Dallas.
However, things get complicated when not one but two sets of assassins show up at the residence to take out the informant and his wife. They succeed in killing the informant and they also take out Detective Jackson. Cooper and Daniella manage to escape, but without any way to contact Cooper’s home office, they are on their own. It doesn’t help Cooper that Daniella keeps trying to escape custody and go her own way. Cooper also deduces that two of the assassins back at the house were actually two detectives from her own precinct that were working for the drug lord.
What ensues is a madcap race to get Daniella to safety while avoiding not only being killed by the two detectives turned assassins but to keep from killing each other as well. Along the way, they meet all kinds of characters and discover more about themselves and each other as they try to survive long enough for Daniella to testify against the drug lord. Of course, it isn’t that simple. I won’t ruin the film for you, but to say that there is a plot twist that will make you go “hmmmm.”
My Thoughts
I thought the film had a decent story line. It could have been better, though. As far as the acting goes, well, it was sub par. I was disappointed in Reese Witherspoon’s performance, and I think that Sofia Vergara was too difficult to understand. The film isn’t a total loss, though. It does have some funny moments and, again, it had a decent story line. I won’t give it a high recommendation, but I won’t say that it is the worst film ever either. Overall, on a scale of one to five, it’s about a two.
Dawn’s Thoughts
I thought the movie was “meh.” I think it was intended to be a comedy, but you can only crack a “short” joke, an “old lady” joke or an “I can’t understand what you are saying” joke so many ways before it gets old. Really old. I was disappointed. I love Reese Witherspoon and Sweet Home Alabama is one of my favorite movies. She plays a country girl who goes a little off her path in this, too, but Sweet Home Alabama this is not. I hope this isn’t the quality of movie we can expect from Witherspoon from now on.
Perhaps this is just a temporary lull in quality roles being offered to her after all the drama surrounding she and her husband’s arrest a couple of years ago. I think Mud was the last good movie I saw her in. Am I wrong? Hopefully she will be in better movies again soon.
Oh bummer, so sorry to hear this wasn’t a hit. I adore Reese.
I really wanted to see this one in the movies. I hate it when the previews spoil all of the funny parts and then the rest of the movie is blah.
I missed this in the theaters. It looks cute, so I can’t wait to curl up on the couch and watch it.

It sounds like it would make a decent rental at least. I definitely agree about Mud. Reese can do some great acting under the right circumstances.
She definitely can. I guess that’s why I was so disappointed in this. Had it been full of like newbie or D list actors, I might not have been so disappointed in it. I felt it was beneath Reese’s abilities, though.

Haven’t seen the movie yet. Thank you for your review. Reese Witherspoon is such a versatile actress and I love watching her films. Sofia Vergara’s character in Modern Family is a hit! I will have to watch this.
I definitely loved her in Sweet Home Alabama–too bad you don’t think she was all that great in this one. It does sound kind of mad cap which can sometimes keep my attention.

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I had a feeling that it was 1) a waste of pairing two ‘big names’ in the industry and 2) going to test my nerves with the kind of jokes used – it looked too slapstick for me. I am not surprised by the review of this movie. Thanks for confirming what I already knew.
