Oz the Great and Powerful: Is The Movie Worth All The Hype?

Oz The Great and Powerful ~

Oz the Great and Powerful

Recently my family and I went to see Oz the Great and Powerful at the theater. If you are considering going to see this film, I offer my review to help you decide whether or not it is worth the price of admission.

Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful

Oz the Great and Powerful is based on the works of L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Wizard of Oz Collection, which includes 15 books. It tells the story of Oscar (James Franco), a two-bit traveling carnival sideshow “magician” who is suddenly whisked away to the Land of Oz. There he finds that they have awaited his arrival as a wise and powerful wizard to defeat the Wicked Witch and reclaim the throne in the Emerald City. After discovering that reclaiming the throne will earn him “more gold than he could imagine,” he decides to become the “wizard” that the people of Oz are looking for, but finds the task of destroying the Wicked Witch is much tougher than he thought.

This movie features not only Franco as Oz but also Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz as the Wicked Witch sisters Theodora and Evanora, Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good Witch of the North, and Zach Braff as Finley the Flying Monkey. It is directed by acclaimed director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead).

The story line is great and the visual and special effects were magnificent! The colors are so vivid they will take your breath away! Most of the acting is good, however, I felt that Franco’s performance was weak {though my daughter adamantly disagrees with me on this point}. I think they could have picked someone better to play Oz. Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams deliver great perfromances as Theodora and Glinda respectively, and Rachel Weisz is very believable as Evanora.

All in all, money spent on this film is money well spent. I think that your entire family will enjoy Oz the Great and Powerful. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, then go see Oz the Great and Powerful at a theater near you!

About Jay Crawford

Jay is a die hard sports fan {football and college basketball being his favorites}. His favorite teams are the Carolina Panthers and Tarheels and, of course, his alma mater, the Appalachian Mountaineers. He spends his free time listening to music, especially KISS, Def Leppard, the Eagles and a lot of the newer country music, and watching comic book and action movies. The more special effects - the better.

  5. Loved loved loved the movie – but I feel like Evanora was not fully developed as a character, Rachel Weisz was amazing, it’s just that I would have liked to see more. Other than that it’s definitely one that I plan on getting on DVD the second it comes out – the Flying Monkey and the China Girl were totally my favorite characters!!!

Evanora was my favorite witch overall. I think Rachel Weisz is an amazing actor…but, like you, I wish there was more. I didn’t really “get” what her provocation was. Maybe if they do sequels she will be more fully developed.

  6. I haven’t seen this film yet but the review sounds like it wonderful.
