Are you a Trekkie? I am. I have been for many years. Ever since the days of the original films I have followed Star Trek, all the way through four more TV series right up through the reboot films of today. I wasn’t all that big of a fan until my dad introduced me to the movies in the early 80s. I also would have to say that I didn’t follow Enterprise all that much. I did watch a few episodes, but I didn’t really watch the whole series. I did watch all of The Next Generation, most of Deep Space Nine and all of Voyager as well. I am rambling a bit here, so let’s get to the point. I am here to offer my opinion on the latest Star Trek film, Star Trek: Beyond.
Star Trek Beyond Movie Review
Star Trek: Beyond features the crew of the Enterprise, the same as in the original series and film, traveling through space discovering new planets and new species. In this film, the Enterprise crew, led by Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) are on a mission to rescue a stranded ship and her crew when they are attacked by an unknown alien race, led by the mysterious Krall (Idris Elba). After crash landing on a nearby planet, they meet Jayla (Sofia Boutella), another alien who was attacked by Krall and is now stranded on the planet as well. Here they must figure out how to survive on this alien world and figure out why Krall attacked their ship. The results are chaotic and full of twists and turns that will leave you guessing what is going to happen next. This film also features Zoe Saldana as Lt. Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Sulu.
My Thoughts
I thought this movie was outstanding. I have to admit that the first reboot film lacked a certain flair for me and I wasn’t all that impressed, however the last two films in this reboot series have been fantastic. I really love Zachary Quinto as Spock. I would even go as far as to say that I think he makes a better Spock than the late Leonard Nimoy (Gasp! To Trekkies, this may seem like blasphemy!). And I am warming up to Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. But, by far the actor that has nailed their role perfectly is Karl Urban as “Bones” McCoy. I can even picture him as DeForest Kelley if I close my eyes and listen to him. This film is action packed and full of good laughs too. These are both staples of the Star Trek films.
The one thing that I love about this reboot series of Star Trek films is that they did not stray too far from the original. In fact, they even pay homage to the original cast in this one. I have seen many reboots that rewrite the story completely of how the characters became who they are. This series thus far has not done that. Also, they acknowledged the deaths of Leonard Nimoy (the original Spock) and Anton Yelchin (who plays Chekov in this film) at the end. That was a real classy move, I must say. I give it 4 and a half stars out of 5.
If you’re looking for a good movie to see this weekend, then this is not a bad place to start. I would even take the kids. The language and violence are at a minimum, so it isn’t too bad for the kiddos. Who knows? You may have a young Trekkie in the making in your household!

Our entire family is so excited about seeing the latest installment of Star Trek. We've always loved the movies and all the series, too. These really took Star Trek to the next level, though.
My husband is a Trekie. He will be thrilled to know that there is a movie for Star Trek.
I can't wait to see this! I hope this installment is as good as the first two!
Not my type of movie but I think my 3 oldest kiddos would love it! I will have to let them know and see if they want to check it out! looks good!
My husband and son went to see this on opening night. They said it was a great movie. I still need to go and see it.
My son in law is a big Star Trek fan. I think he is planning on watching this movie.
I was never a huge Star Trek fan but my bff is! Probably will end up watching this to accompany her.
Girls night at a Star Trek movie. I love it!
This movie is one of my husband's favorites! It is really good.
That is great that he loved a new movie that much. So many people complain about the movies these days but I think there are some really good ones that have come out recently.
We go back a very long time wiht this franchise. I have to see this one, too!
I still can't decide if I want to see this movie or not. I was forced to watch Star Trek as a kid but I did like this previous movie. I will probably see it when it comes out on DVD.
Unlike Jay, I didn't watch Star Trek movies as a kid. I think the first one I saw was Nemesis and was shocked that I liked it so much. I might have to go see this one, too, at some point.
