On June 14th, we caught the Quit!! Tour at PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, NC. The tour features HARDY, Kip Moore, Travis Denning and Ella Langley. Today we are sharing with you our Quit!! HARDY concert review and setlist along with reviews of all of the acts featured including Travis Denning, Kip Moore and Ella Langley.

Check out my interview with Travis Denning as well as this article that I wrote about him previously. I said he was super talented and that he was going to be big years ago. Called it! Well, well well, I am so humble. Seriously though, the man is not only truly talented but he also looks the exact same age he did when I met him several years ago. Don’t worry, Travis Denning fans, he won’t just do 8 songs – he joins HARDY later in his set for a performance of their currently popular, “Southern Rock” duet.
Travis Denning is the only left handed guitarist that I can think of right off the top of my head. I find that interesting and, as someone who doesn’t know jack about guitars, I am wondering: does he have his guitars specially made? Or does he just flip a “right handed” guitar over? Should I ever get to interview and/or meet him again, I shall ask. If any of you fine readers know, please share with me in the comments or on social media.
Editor’s Note: Since this article was posted, I have learned that Denning can actually play a right-handed guitar upside down if in a pinch! Bravo!
Denning should probably be glad he wasn’t my grandmother born in Australia in the 1920s. She was a lefty and she said they forced her to write with her right hand in school. She stated that this made her ambidextrous but I don’t know…I can’t recall having ever seen her write with her left hand. I wonder if it didn’t instead just force her into the habit of doing something foreign and uncomfortable to her?

Kip Moore talked about his early days performing at Coyote Joe’s. Ah, memories. I love that place and need to get back there soon. Ironically, Coyote Joe’s is the place where I saw Travis Denning perform that concert I was talking about meeting him at a few years earlier. Kip Moore also promised the concertgoers that he would come back and do a full length concert for us next summer. He did get to do 10 songs, though, so that is actually a pretty good set, especially considering what I just posted about Parmalee.
I am not all that familiar with Kip Moore. I do like that song “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck.” “She’s Mine” seems a little possessive to me, though. Like, if you see that girl out there, make sure she knows she is mine. The feel of this song reminds me of “Every Breath You Take” by The Police and “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell. He wants her to know she is his possession and he has people watching to make sure it stays that way? These songs would definitely make my Top 10 List of Most [Hopefully] Unintentional Stalkery Vibe Songs. New post idea? In all seriousness though, his show was really good and I loved his backdrop! He also got a smutty sign from a fan that he held up for all of us to see [pic in the gallery above], so I thought that was pretty funny. He sounded good live and he seems to have a great sense of humor. 🙂 I would see him again.

We typically stay until the end of every concert but, admittedly, we did cut out of this one after “Give Heaven Some Hell.” The heat has just been ridiculous this summer and this is the 2nd concert we have left early because of it. However, we talked to some people we knew who went to the concert so we ***think*** this is the rest of the setlist.

As someone who worked in country radio for 10 years, I certainly can’t say that HARDY is wrong. I had not heard this particular song before seeing HARDY perform it live and, I must say, it really has resonated with me since. I haven’t worked in radio in other formats but, being quite familiar with how country radio works, I can say that I have seen plenty of evidence showing how both the radio stations and the fans can turn on you real fast [re: The Chicks] and how many execs in high places love to decide what you, as the listener that they didn’t ask, want to hear [re: Tomato Gate and pretty much every country “phase”]. I often think about what an exceptionally hard time women have had as both performers and as on air personalities in the field. Historically, there been have been far fewer women on the air, both as the singer and the announcer. Female singers have consistently less airplay than their male counterparts and female on air personalities have been almost unheard of except as sidekicks to males or as the rare solo personality in much less desirable time slots. I have even been told personally by a [male] higher up that people “don’t want to hear women” on the air. I was also instructed to never play more than 2 women an hour and never to play them back to back. In retrospect, I should have said something. But I didn’t.
Having said all that, I have to admit that I haven’t previously given much thought to how a man might have experienced some push back in radio, as well. But the 2010s were alive and thriving with “Bro Country” [think Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, etc.] and now I feel it’s slowly being replaced with more traditional and Americana type sounds [think Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, etc.] Audiences change, sounds change, tastes change. Perhaps HARDY was being forced led by higher ups and radio execs to be more into one [or both] of these movements and he was just not having it. Good for him. And Thank God radio isn’t the be all end all for artists like it used to be. I think there is plenty enough room for all kinds of talent at the table. And judging by the size of the crowd at PNC Music Pavilion that night, I am guessing his fans are just fine with his choices, too.
Ella Langley
Ella Langley was the first opening act. I was not familiar with her at all before this performance but her look reminded me of Sylvia. Remember, her? “Except for the snapshot, he doesn’t know I’ve got….” I was a few rows back from the stage, though, so if she reminded you instead of someone else, please let me know. I very much enjoyed her show and will definitely be downloading some of her music and becoming more accustomed with Ms Langley. Be sure to watch for her during HARDY’s set!
