So last night I watched the premiere of Lifetime’s “Britney Ever After.” Although, admittedly, I wasn’t expecting much based on the commercials, I love Britney Spears, so I decided to watch it in hopes that I would learn more about her. I also hoped that this unauthorized biopic would pay homage to her and not be all tabloid-y.
6 Things Wrong With Lifetime’s Britney Ever After
1. The Britney Spears Portrayal Is Bad - The actress portraying Britney Spears looks nothing like her. I get more of an Amanda Seyfried/Katherine Heigl mashup vibe. She sounded a bit like her when she spoke but that is where the similarities end.
2. The Justin Timberlake Portrayal Is Worse – The actor portraying Justin Timberlake looked nothing like him, except for the iconic hairdo when he was with NSync. Other than that, no bueno. He also came off as a bit of a dork. Sure, Justin was a teen in a lot of this biopic, but I didn’t feel like he was accurately portrayed. They turned Justin Timberlake into K-Fed. Ouch.
3. There Were Several Historical Inaccuracies – From wig color changes to denim jumpsuits where there used to be denim dresses, Lifetime seems to either have many, many of their facts wrong or they took huge liberties with history. Either way, these things could have easily been portrayed correctly, which makes me strongly question the validity of the rest of the biopic.
4. There Is Not Enough Of Britney’s Music - The best things about Britney is her music and there just isn’t much of it in this movie. Why they highlighted her covers of Patsy Cline and Joan Jett tunes, and left out most of her more iconic hits is beyond me. I am assuming they couldn’t get the rights. And that really takes away from the experience.
5. Britney Came Off As A Love Starved Idiot – Britney Spears has had a successful career for almost 2 decades. I don’t think an idiot could pull that off. Also, it’s really easy to pick and choose unflattering moments from anyone’s life to make them look a certain way. I think that is exactly what was done in this biopic. It cared less about being factual and more about being sensational. I am OK with that sometimes. That Saved By The Bell one was great, lol. But they should have instead called it, “Brit Brit: An Unauthorized Biography” or something along those lines.
6. What’s With All The VMAs? – I know that Britney has had some really iconic performances at the VMAs. But come on. This biopic seemed to focus a very disproportionate amount of time on her VMA performances as compared to any of her other performances throughout her career. She didn’t just perform at the VMAs, people.
Final Thoughts On Britney Ever After
All in all, I watched it once but I probably wouldn’t watch it again. To me, the title, “Britney Ever After” implies that this would have paid homage to her. It did not. They chose select moments in her life that made her look weak and needy. And I just don’t think that is at all a total or fair representation of Britney Spears. If you are looking for a way to kill a couple hours, watch it. If you are looking for factual representation, pass.
Did You Watch Britney Ever After?
If so, what did you think? Do you agree with my thoughts? Do you disagree? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
I did not see this movie. I actually know very little about her. I hate when movies get someone’s life wrong because a lot of people look at it as total truth.

I didn’t even know this was coming out. What a bummer that it didn’t represent her. That’s so disappointing when things claim to be biographies and get things wrong!

Thanks for the heads up. I didn’t even know there was a Britney biopic. Perhaps the producers needed to do a bit more planning before production started.

I definitely didnt watch but heard about it. Im not sure about watching now.
I would have hoped for more honestly. This doesnt sound like a great portrayal.
I loved Britney when I was younger. I would have loved to have seen a great life story.
Ah, I hadn’t heard about this. It’s sad that they didn’t put more effort into making it accurate. It could have been great.
I will have to check this out. I have been hearing mixed reviews on it. I have been a Britney fan since the beginning.
How could they not have enough music when that is one reason so many people love her? Fail on that part but I guess I’m glad they at least made it…

I have not heard of this show at all. I’ll ask my friend who loves Britney if she’s seen it.

My first thought when I read your issue about the music used was rights issues – but who knows. I can’t say that I would notice inaccuracies because I honestly don’t know that much about her history.

I haven’t seen this yet. It sounds like they took a lot of liberties with this.

You learn that anything is from one specific point of view. You can pick and choose anything out of a life and make that person look horrible or saintly. I loved the honest opinion backed with examples.
I didn’t know that they are making a movie of Britney’s life. But I think I will pass this one. It’s just disappointing that people tend to focus on the negative side of her career when she’s got a really awesome success. I love her and her music and I hope they will focus on that next time.
