One thing that you might know about the two of us, Dawn and myself, if you read this blog, is that we are avid fans of comic book movies. We have seen just about all of them as soon as they came out in the theaters. And, needless to say, we were really excited to see Suicide Squad when it came out this past week. Me, personally, I had a critical eye towards this film since the past couple of DC Comics films have not performed up to standard in the theaters. Also, there is a rant here that I felt must be included, so if you dislike, please skip to the end following the plot summary.
Suicide Squad Movie Review
Suicide Squad stars Will Smith as Deadshot, an assassin with prefect aim, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the deranged sidekick of The Joker (played by Jared Leto) and a host of other super villains that have been locked up by the superheroes of the DC Comics world. In this movie, intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles this group of super villains in an attempt to do something that they haven’t really ever done before: serve the good side. The question is, just how does she plan to keep them under control? When one of the members of her team finds a way to go rogue and circumvent Waller’s security protocols in order to serve their own vengeful plan, Waller must dispatch the Suicide Squad to stop them.
Warning: Rant
Now, here comes the part with the rant. We got to the theater well before the movie started and found some decent seats. In comes a group that sits directly behind us and proceeds to talk, and talk and talk, throughout the entire movie. I don’t mean whisper, I mean talk. I can appreciate that you have extensive knowledge of the characters or that you like to guess what is about to happen next, but not everyone in the theater wants to hear it. There used to be warnings at the beginning of the movie about talking. Anymore, there are only warnings about cell phone usage and texting. Just because you aren’t supposed to use your cell phone in the theater doesn’t mean you can carry on a conversation at regular volume in the theater either. Please, keep it quiet!
Back To The Movie
I have noticed that many of the DC Comics films have the same, well, problem. They are dark, and their story lines take way too long to develop, leading to over 2 hour movies that have about one and a half hours of back story and about thirty minutes of action. This film defies all that. It has a lot of color, and the back story is integrated into the film in a good way that does not leave you waiting for the action. I was very pleased with it overall. I loved Will Smith, but the real hit of the film was Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She may have been a little off (in the head, I mean) but she sure didn’t take any crap. I was also pleased with Jared Leto’s performance as the Joker. Following Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson could not have been easy, but Leto pulled it off pretty well in my book. I won’t say he was as good as Nicholson, but I felt that he was better than Ledger. I give this film a solid four and an half stars out of five. I think you will enjoy it.

Dawn’s Thoughts
Hi! Dawn here! As I am editing this, I thought I would add my thoughts. Like Jay, I have felt a little lackluster towards the DC Comics movies so far – except Superman: Man Of Steel. I thought the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was just ok. It was too dark and took forever to get to the point, and Wonder Woman wasn’t in it nearly enough. I am really excited for the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. Other than that, I haven’t been especially excited for DC Comics movies, until I watched Suicide Squad. The story moved along fast enough, the characters were interesting and likable {especially Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne also made a pretty cool Enchantress} and the movie was very cool to look at. Colors everywhere! It looked awesome on the big screen. It’s not often I stay through credits {yes, there is something to see} and think the credits are actually cool. I give Suicide Squad 5 stars! And I will go as far to say that, of the movies I have seen this summer, Suicide Squad, Bad Moms and Ghostbusters are the ones to see. Yay for summer movies!

I’ve heard so much about this movie. I want to see it. Finally a story about the bad guys.

we have not seen this – but my teen son wants to. I’m just not sure if the content is approriate or not? What do you think for a 14 year old
Dawn McAlexander says
I would definitely have let her see this at that age but a lot of people I know also consider me quite lenient in what I would let her see, so keep that in mind. Having said that, I am not really recalling anything that I found particularly offensive or inappropriate for that age group that you wouldn’t see in any other movie. There is some violence which is to be expected in this type of film and that is about all I am thinking of. I hope that helps. Are there specific things you would like to avoid? I will be happy to answer more questions if you have any.
Tiaras & Tantrums says
Thanks! This is great – I just worry about inappropriate content these days – more in the sexual/nudity nature than anything
Dawn McAlexander says
I totally get that. Margot Robbie’s outfit is pretty skimpy but you never see anything. I don’t recall any other sexuality or nudity stuff besides that come to think of it. If I remember anything, I will let you know.

I keep hearing such mixes reviews of this one. I am just going to have to go see if for myself!

That’s true. I read reviews but I never make up my mind until I see it for myself. ๐

I”ve heard so many mixed reviews about this movie. I didn’t like who they cast as Wonder Woman in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. She did a great job but not as I imagined Wonder Woman to be.

See, I didn’t think I would like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman either. I mean, no one is as awesome as Lynda Carter, am I right? But when I saw her on the big screen, I was convinced. I think that Ben Affleck made a good Batman, too. I never loved Christian Bale as Batman. Now Jay, he feels the opposite about the Batman actors, lol.
Amanda Love says
Finally a nice review of the film. I’ve been reading negative reviews and it’s disheartening. I think the cast did a great job and that they definitely portrayed the roles the best they could.

I rarely ever see a movie that I just despise. I at least like most of them to some extent. I just think about all the hard work people put into stuff and it amazes me how they can even make this movie magic happen! I also am pretty good at choosing things that I will like. If it’s a movie that I think I will have nothing good to say about it, I just usually don’t watch or review it.

I probably won’t get to see this until it comes out on iTunes, but it does look like a good one. I like movies like this.

I did a review on my channel too for this film! I was pleasantly surprised and I am not into the DC Comics like that. It had an interesting storyline and I love the production!

I really enjoyed Suicide Squad! I did feel like Margot’s character was a bit more sexualized than necessary. Her character is genuinely interesting and comical without all the sexual inneuendos.
